Senior Business Project Manager

My client globally has in excess of US$ 4.5 Trn assets under custody and US$1 Trn of assets under administration and supported by over 4000 staff located in 44 markets.


The business is within Securities Services. The SS business forms part of the client’s Global Transaction Bank division.


As Senior Business Programme Manager, the incumbent will lead the strategic investment programme for the Global Custody product line. The programme, scheduled to run for three years, focused in two phases.


Phase 1 focussing on Asia,


phase 2 leveraging the enhanced capability and operating model in Europe.


Key objectives include


  • Increasing global custody market share significantly in existing and new markets. Those markets include developed markets in EMEA and Asia, and the developing Asian markets where significant growth is foreseen,

  • Capturing the benefits of scale in order to compete more effectively with large global custodians pursuing an Asian / European extension strategy

  • Securing cross-sell of higher margin custody-linked products and services, i.e. Foreign Exchange, Securities Lending, Securities Execution, Securities Financing, Payments and Cash Management

  • Maximising the opportunities in existing custody capability through the client’s footprint in Asia

    The Programme Manager will


  • Be responsible for all aspects of Global Custody Strategic Investment Programme, ensuring all workstreams deliver the expected benefits within the pre-agreed costs and time-scales. The work streams will include programme initiation, recruitment and staffing, assessment of client and market opportunities, development of the operating model, rationalisation of platforms and implementation of the operating model

  • Successfully manage, control, govern, co-ordinate, monitor, and report, on all aspects of the programmes of change, which enhances the reputation for professional execution, without any noticeable impact on BAU operations.

  • Communicate and report effectively with all stakeholders, clients and team members, providing regular reassurance regarding progress.

  • Actively manage the change programme, to ensure progress is on track, issues are resolved, risks are mitigated, etc. and best use is made of the resources allocated.

    Project Management


  • Manage full programme of activities from feasibility study to implementation by applying standard company project management methodology.

  • Deploy effective control and management mechanisms to achieve optimum performance of project resources.

  • Communicate effectively to all stakeholders and team members through an effective governance process.

  • Employ active issue resolution and risk mitigation methods to aid delivery.

  • Manage budgets with IT and the business.

  • Undertake strategic forward planning.

  • Monitor and manage all project key milestones and in particular cross work stream dependencies.

  • Encourage the use of best practice and maintain standards of project management disciplines across work streams, acting as a mentor/coach where necessary for less experienced project managers.

    Management and Communication


  • Secure and manage implementation resources, ensuring that the project objectives are achieved. Undertake line management responsibilities for assigned Business Project Managers and Subject Matter Experts/Business Analysts.

  • Disseminate project management knowledge among all members of the project teams

  • Ensure effective communication on projects, both verbally and via written reports is maintained at all levels

  • Ensure that all team members receive the appropriate training.

  • Work closely with, and gain the sponsorship of, Information Technology and central Programme Management Offices

  • Communicate individual objectives to all team members, and monitor their performance against those objectives at the end of the project.

    Risk Management


  • Ensure compliance with all relevant regulatory and legal requirements.

  • Ensure compliance with Group Standards Manual and all relevant Functional Instruction Manuals and Business Instruction Manuals, as appropriate.

  • Minimise operational, reputational and financial risk, as appropriate.

  • Ensure the Custody Services business functions attain satisfactory, or higher, internal and external audit ratings.

    To maintain internal control standards, including timely implementation of internal and external audit points together with any issues raised by external auditors.' To re-assess continually the operational risk inherent in the business, taking account of changing economic or market conditions, legal and regulatory requirements, operating procedures and practices, management re-structurings and the impact of new technology


    Market Awareness


    Maintain an awareness of topical market issues, and in particular changes in best practice and legislation in the Securities Services business.


    Essential Skills and Competencies


  • A programme management professional, with a successful track record in project delivery, preferably across geographies and within a securities environment.

  • Sound knowledge of the securities industry and global market infrastructure preferred.

  • Strategic and creative thinker.

  • Highly effective change manager.

  • Team player and people motivator.

  • Personal qualities of stability and leadership.

  • Strong communicator, and negotiator, both verbally and in writing.

  • Able to work in pressurised environment and manage priorities effectively
